LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team dominated the San Diego State Aztecs (3-23 overall, 0-16 in the MWC) with a 78-45 victory on Thursday night in Laramie. The Cowgirls now move to 20-6 overall and 10-5 in the Mountain West Conference. The 20 wins marks the first time since the 1989-90 season that a Wyoming team has achieved that total.
"This was a game that I was very nervous about," said head coach Joe Legerski. "There is a lot of excitement in our program right now and we always talk about being focused for the next game. I thought we were a little jittery at first then we started making a couple of shots and we got into our game plan. Our defense tonight was great and we really did a nice job shooting the ball."
Four Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures, including freshman Megan McGuffey. She had a team high 14 points and seven rebounds, while shooting 6-10 (.600) from the field. Erin Hicks and Dominique Sisk both finished with 13 followed by Jodi Bolerjack with 11. Wyoming shot 29-53 (.547) from the field, while out rebounding the Aztecs 32-23.
San Diego State was led by Erin Jackson who finished with 11 points, while Michelle Strawberry has six rebounds to lead the way. The Aztecs shot 16-41 (.390) from the field, but committed 25 turnovers.
The Cowgirls took a very early 4-0 lead, but two quick baskets by the Aztecs evened things up. Wyoming would score five straight to regain a 9-4 advantage while a Taryn Milburn three-point field goal would pull them to within two, 9-7. UW responded with a 14-0 scoring run as the Aztecs went over seven minutes without scoring. They would break the drought with a free throw by Veronica Shaw and would finally hit double-figures at the seven minute mark to make it 24-11. The Cowgirls continued to maintain the lead and closed out the half on a 14-9 run to take a 38-20 score in to the locker room.
It was never really close in the second half as the Cowgirls extended their lead out of the break with a 7-0 run to make it 48-20, while San Diego State went almost three minutes before scoring. The Cowgirls were able to play their entire bench as Sisk would go 3-3 from the field in the second half to finish with her 13 points. In the end, Wyoming earned their 20th win of the season by the final of 78-45.
The Cowgirls will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, March 4, as they host the Utah Utes at 2:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. Also, there will be a pre-game reception prior to the game beginning at 12:00 p.m. in the Rochelle Athletics Center, War Room. Food and beverage are compliments of the Cowboy Joe Club.
