SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (22-6 overall, 12-3 MWC) came away with a big road win with a 63-50 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs (12-15 overall, 6-9 MWC) on Wednesday night in San Diego.
"Big plays all around tonight from each individual that stepped on the floor," said head coach Joe Legerski. "Offensive rebounding was a key tonight and to get six and seven rebounds respectively from Chaundra and Aubrey was tremendous. Aubrey once again carried this team offensively and made big shot after big shot. It also helped to have three players in double-figures with Jade and Chaundra with 12 and 11 points."
Three Cowgirls finished the game in double-figures led by senior Aubrey Vandiver. She recorded her 12th double-double with 28 points and 13 rebounds. She was followed by Jade Kennedy with 12 points, while Chaundra Sewell chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds. Wyoming shot 21-58 (.362) from the field and 16-24 (.667) while out rebounding the Aztecs, 41-39.
San Diego State was led by three players with nine points, Coco Davis, Sajoyia Griffin and Gabrielle Clark. Jessika Bradley finished with a team high nine rebounds. The Aztecs shot 19-57 (.333) from the field and 7-15 (.467) from the three point line.
It was all Aztecs to begin the game as they took an 11-2 lead through the first media timeout. A basket by Jade Kennedy would end a four minute scoring drought for the Cowgirls. After a basket by SDSU, Jade Kennedy hit a three-point field goal to cut into the San Diego State lead, 14-7. That basket would start a 12-0 run to give Wyoming their first lead of the game 16-14. A three-point field goal by Gabrielle Clark would end a six minute scoring drought by the Aztecs to put them back up one, 17-16. Wyoming regained the lead 18-17 with a Jade Kennedy basket and then SDSU scored the next six straight to take back a three-point advantage, 23-20. A basket by Aubrey Vandiver would end the run. A couple of free throws and a three-point field goal by Ashley Sickles put Wyoming up two, 27-25, with two minutes to go in the half. Courtney Clements hit a shot to give them one point lead, 28-27. With the clock winding down, Aubrey Vandiver hit a three-point field goal to give Wyoming a 30-28 lead heading into the lockerroom.
Vandiver led all scorers in the half with 11 along with six rebounds. She was followed by Jade Kennedy with seven points, while Hillary Carlson added five. Wyoming was 11-28 (.393) from the field. San Diego State was led by Coco Davis with six points and four rebounds. Courtney Clements added five points. The Aztecs shot 10-25 (.400) from the field.
Out of the break the two teams traded scores back and forth until a 5-0 run by the Cowgirls gave them a 41-36 advantage through the first media timeout. San Diego State responded with five straight points to pull within two, 43-41. After the Cowgirls went back up 45-41, two straight baskets by the Aztecs evened it up at 45 all with 11 minutes remaining in the half. Both teams went a large amount of time without scoring. Two free throws by Hillary Carlson would end a seven minute scoring drought for the Cowgirls to make it 47-45. That would start a 7-0 run for Wyoming to give them a seven point advantage, 52-45. A three-point play by Gabrielle Clark stopped a six minute drought for San Diego State to narrow the gap to four, 52-48. The Cowgirls hit a basket and had a couple of free throws to make it 56-48 with a little under four minutes to go in the game. Paris Johnson hit a field goal to chip into the UW lead, 56-50. The Cowgirls scored the final seven points in the game to go on to the 63-50 victory.
The Cowgirls will close out the regular season on Saturday, March 5, as they host the BYU Cougars. The game is set for 2 p.m. It will be the final home game for four Cowgirls seniors, Hillary Carlson, Jade Kennedy, Randi Richardson and Aubrey Vandiver.
