Laramie, Wyo. (March 5, 2003) -- Behind double-figure scoring from senior Carrie Bacon, the Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball Team (17-9 overall, 7-6 MWC) earned a 60-43 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs (9-16 overall, 3-10 MWC) on Wednesday night in Laramie.
San Diego State struck first with basket to start the game, but it was the Cowgirls who responded with seven to gain an early 7-2 advantage. The Aztecs answered with five straight of their own to tie it up as Wyoming went several minutes without a basket until a Brenda Pickup three-point shot. The two teams traded baskets as SDSU regained their second lead of the game, 14-13, but a quick layup by Darci Arsene helped Wyoming take a one-point lead. After that the Cowgirls ran off eight straight to open up one of their largest leads of the game 23-14 and as the Aztecs went almost five minutes without a basket. It really continued to be a struggle for San Diego State offensively in the final minutes of the half as they were outscored 8-2 and Wyoming would take a 31-18 lead into the half.
Senior Carrie Bacon led all scorers in the half with 14, while sophomore Ashley Elliott led with five rebounds. As a team, the Cowgirls were 10-30 (.333) from the field, but outrebounded the Aztecs, 25-13. Jamey Cox was the leading scorer for San Diego State with six in the half.
It was San Diego State who opened up the second half strong with a 10-4 run to close the margin to seven points. With the score 37-28 in favor of the Cowgirls, each team would go on a five minutes scoring drought before another Brenda Pickup three-point basket. After that there still wasn't a lot of scoring as each team combined for nine points, but with the Aztecs inching closer, 43-34. Up by 11 points with four minutes to go, Wyoming seemed to gain some momentum and pulled ahead 53-48. San Diego State continued to battle until the very end, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Cowgirls went onto the 60-43 victory.
"We wanted to push the ball and run transition tonight," said head coach Cindy Fisher. "I thought the team did a great job of that and gave us several opportunities to score."
"I thought Brenda Pickup and Cherrith (Young) did a great job for us tonight defensively on Jamey Cox," she added. "Down the line, everyone who defended her did a nice job and really forced her to take some shots she probably didn't want to take. Also, I felt our rebounding was phenomenal, especially Ashley Elliott with ten. We talked about it this week about finishing each possession with a defensive checkout."
Wyoming was led in scoring by senior Carrie Bacon, who finished with a game high 24 points. She was 6-9 from the field, a perfect 11-11 from the charity stripe, while bringing down five boards. Sophomore Ashley Elliott finished her night with a career high ten rebounds, plus eight points. Other scorers included Brenda Pickup with 14, and Darci Arsene and Ann McColl with five each. The Cowgirls were 16-47 (.340) from the field, 24-29 (.828) from the charity stripe, while outrebounding the Aztecs, 48-27.
San Diego State was led by Jamey Cox and Ashlee Dunlap who finished with 13 and 12 points respectively. Dunlap also led the team in rebounding with seven. The Aztecs shot 17-56 (.304) from the field.
The Cowgirls will wrap up the regular conference season on Friday night against the UNLV Lady Rebels at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. It will be the final game for the Cowgirls seven seniors Darci Arsene, Carrie Bacon, Lisa McCann, Ann McColl, Heather Shaffner, Chassie Wiersma and Cherrith Young.
