DENVER - In the first day of the Mountain West Conference Tournament, the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (16-12 overall, 7-7 in the MWC) lost a disappointing game, 64-59, against the UNLV Lady Rebels (16-13 overall, 6-8 in the MWC) on Wednesday afternoon in Denver.

Senior Ashley Elliott finished her day with a game high 24 points, along with four rebounds and three assists in 39 minutes of play. She was followed by Erin Hicks with 17 and Hanna Zavecz with 14 points. Hicks also led the way with a team high nine boards. The Cowgirls were 21-58 (.362) from the field and a dismal 4-15 (.267) from the three-point line.

The Lady Rebels were led by RanDee Henry who recorded 16 points along with 14 rebounds. Sheena Moore and Brittney Thomas also had ten points each. UNLV was 24-60 (.400) from the field and out rebounded the Cowgirls, 44-35.

Wyoming started off the game the way they wanted as they took a 10-6 advantage in the early going with some solid shooting. Unfortunately the Lady Rebels responded with a 17-0 run to extend their lead to double-digits, 23-10, while the Cowgirls went absolutely cold gong over seven minutes without a basket. A Michelle Taylor basket finally ended the drought and they would go on an 8-0 run of their own to cut in to that Lady Rebel lead, 23-18, while UNLV went in to a little of a scoring slump. The Lady Rebels quickly regained a seven point lead, but five straight points to close out the half for the Cowgirls put them in the locker room down 31-27.

UNLV scored the first six of nine to open the second half to push the score back up to seven, 37-30. Wyoming battled back and went on a 12-6 scoring run to pull within one, 43-42, but a big three-point field goal from Sheena Moore put the Lady Rebels back up by four, 46-42. Once again, the Cowgirls wouldn't go away as they scored four unanswered to even it up at 46 all. The two teams traded baskets back and forth as Wyoming couldn't cash in on several opportunities to take the lead. Down 60-56 with a little over a minute to go, the Cowgirls made one final push and pulled to within three. Unfortunately the shots wouldn't fall for Wyoming and free throws by Brittney Thomas would seal the victory for the Lady Rebels, 64-59.

Wyoming closes out the year with a 16-13 overall record and a 7-7 mark in the conference.
