The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team (20-8 overall, 10-6 in the MWC) closed out the first round of the XBOX Live Mountain West Conference Tournament with a 63-55 loss against the TCU Horned Frogs (18-10 overall, 11-5 in the MWC) on Wednesday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.
Two Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures, including senior Erin Hicks. She finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Megan McGuffey chipped in ten, while two players finished with nine. Sophomore Hanna Zavecz brought down a career high 15 rebounds. As a team, they were 17-59 (.288) from the field and just 4-16 (.250) from beyond the arc.
TCU was led by Natasha Lacy with 14 points and nine rebounds. Lorie Butler-Rayford had 12, while two other players had 11. The Lady Frogs were 23-47 (.489) from the field and 7-13 (.538) from beyond the arc.
It was the Lady Frogs who struck early by taking a 7-0 lead, while it took the Cowgirls three and a half minutes to get their first score with a three-point field goal by Erin Hicks. TCU extended their lead to double-figures, 17-3, as offense continued to be a struggle for Wyoming as they would hit only two field goals in nine minutes of the first half. They would pull within nine, 17-8, unfortunately TCU would run off five straight to make it a 14-point lead, 22-8. The Cowgirls finally hit double-figures with ten points at the 6:44 mark and could only manage to score seven points the remainder of the half, while the Lady Frogs scored ten to take a 32-17 lead in to the locker room.
Wyoming was led at the half by Erin Hicks with six points followed by Jodi Bolerjack with five and Hanna Zavecz with four. The Cowgirls shot 3-25 (.120) from the field and 2-6 (.333) from beyond the arc. TCU was led by Andrianne Ross with eight and two players with six points. The Lady Frogs were 12-25 (.480) from the field and 6-11 (.545) from beyond the arc.
The Cowgirls tried to get something going right out of the break as they went on a 10-6 run to pull within 11, 38-27. After a basket by TCU's Lorie Butler-Rayford, Wyoming battled back with nine straight points to make it a four point game, 40-36, as the Lady Frogs went over three minutes with out a basket. TCU would answer back by scoring the next nine of thirteen to regain a nine-point advantage, 49-40, with eight minutes remaining. There was no quit in the Cowgirls as went on another 9-0 run to make it a two point game, 51-49. Two free throws and a three-point field goal by TCU helped give them an eight point lead, 57-49, with under four minutes to go. With one last push, the Cowgirls pulled to within four, 57-53 unfortunately a steal and a three-point play by TCU put them back up by eight. The Lady Frogs would end up taking the game by the final of 63-55.
