Laramie, Wyoming -- Fourth year head coach Joe Legerski and the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team opened up the 2006-07 exhibition season with an impressive 77-46 victory over the Adams State Grizzlies, on Friday night, in Laramie.
"I think you always start slow at the beginning of the season regardless of how many returning players you have," said head coach Joe Legerski. "Each player has a great deal that they want to prove every night and I think it was a start to another year.
"I thought we got a look at several players in a game situation tonight. Justyna played 30 minutes tonight, got up and down the court and she did a nice job for her first game. Aubrey Vandiver had a nice game as well. She went 4-5 from the field and only had one turnover. Alysia Kraft also gave us a big lift off the bench in the first half."
Wyoming had two players in double-figures, including newcomer Justyna Podziemska. She finished with 15 points, six rebounds and six steals in 30 minutes of play. Alysia Kraft had 11 points off the bench followed by Aubrey Vandiver with nine. Podziemska led the way with six rebounds while Hanna Zavecz and Elisabeth Dissen had five rebounds. As a team, they shot 30-67 (.448) and 8-13 (.615) from the charity stripe.
The Grizzles were led by Ashley Chambers who finished with 14 points off the bench. She was followed by Isil Ozkan who had 11 points and five rebounds. They were 18-47 (.383) from the field and 7-11 (.636) from the free throw line.
It took a little while for both teams to get going in the first half as Adams State took an early 4-2 lead. The Cowgirls answered back with a 9-6 scoring run to go up 13-10. With the score in favor of Wyoming, both teams went on a scoring drought as the Cowgirls went over three minutes and the Grizzlies went almost six without a basket. By the time Adams State did score, Wyoming had built a double-figure lead 24-12. With seven minutes remaining in the half, Wyoming continued to get stronger offensively as they out scored Adams State 17-6 the remainder of the way to take a 41-18 lead in to the locker room.
The Cowgirls were led by Justyna Podziemska in the first half as she finished with 13 points and six rebounds. The Grizzlies were led by Isil Ozkan with seven points. Nicole Tatum led the way with four rebounds for Adams State.
Out of the half, the Cowgirls scored the first five points to make it a 46-18 game, but Adams State came back with two striaght baskets to pull within 24, 46-22. They would never pull any closer as Wyoming continued to maintain a significant lead through out the second half as they came away with 77-46 victory.
Wyoming will play one more exhibition on Friday, Nov. 10, against the Colorado Christian Cougars before opening up regular season play on Sunday, Nov. 12 against the University of San Francisco.
