LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team opened up the 2009-10 exhibition season with an impressive 72-36 victory over the Adams State Grizzlies, on Monday night, in Laramie.
"There is no doubt I was pleased with the effort tonight," said UW head coach Joe Legerski. "We talked about going out and winning four minute segments and felt we lost only one of those throughout the evening. It was great intensity for 40 minutes and the defense was special tonight. Our post players did a good job of getting around and battling inside all night. That helped when we held them scoreless for the first eight minutes of the second half, which allowed us to extend our lead."
Three Cowgirls finished the evening in double-figures led by redshirt junior Aubrey Vandiver. She recorded 14 points, six rebounds and four steals in 28 minutes. Kristen Scheffler followed with 13 points, while Hillary Carlson added 12 points and six rebounds. Wyoming shot 22-61 (.361) from the field and 11-29 (.379) from beyond the arc.
Adams State was led by Paige Ricker with 11 points and two rebounds off the bench. Chloe Cable added seven points while Misti Solomon brought down 12 boards. The Grizzlies were 13-51 (.255) from the field and 1-11 (.091) from beyond the arc.
The Cowgirls stormed out to begin the game taking a 10-0 lead. It took the Grizzlies three minutes before they got on the board, which made it 10-2 going into the first media timeout. Wyoming would maintain that lead which they increased to double-figures, 21-9. Adams State scored two straight baskets to pull within eight, 21-13. The Cowgirls responded with a 9-1 run to make it 30-14 with a little under five minutes in the half. The two teams would play even the remainder of the way as Wyoming took a 36-20 lead into the locker room.
At the half Vandiver led all scorers with 11 while Carlson added ten. Vandiver and Chaundra Sewell were the leading rebounders for the Cowgirls with four. Wyoming shot 12-29 (.414) from the field and 8-11 (.727) from the free throw line.
Adams State was led by Ricker with nine points, while Solomon added four. The Grizzlies shot 9-26 (.346) from the field.
Wyoming scored 15 straight out of the break to extend their lead to 31 points, 51-20. It took the Grizzlies until the 12:10 mark and two free throws to get them on the board in the second half. The Cowgirls lead was never in jeopardy as they went on to the 72-36 win.
Wyoming will play one more exhibition on Friday, November 6, against the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves. The game is set to tip off at 7 p.m. They will open up regular season play on Friday, November 13 against the Denver Pioneers.
