LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 4, 2004) --
Second year head coach Joe Legerski and the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team opened up the 2004-05 exhibition season with a 58-33 victory over the Adams State Grizzlies, on Thursday night, in Laramie.
It was low scoring in the first several minutes of the game as Adams State took an early 4-3 lead. The Cowgirls answered back with 11 straight points to open up a 14-4 advantage, while the Grizzlies went almost six minutes without a basket. After a 7-2 run by Adams State pulled them to within five, 16-11, Wyoming closed out the half on a 13-3 run to take a 29-14 lead in to the locker room.
Junior Erin Hicks led all scorers at half with eight points, followed by Ashley Elliott with seven and freshman Hanna Zavecz with five. Elliott and Kristen Lenhardt also finished with four rebounds. The Cowgirls were 9-24 (.375) from the field compared to 6-21 (.286) by the Grizzlies, who where led by Katie Doherty with six points in the first half.
Right out of the half, the Cowgirls hit two quick three-pointers to go up 35-14. Adams State stayed determined and went on an 8-5 run, but UW continued to hold on to their double-digit lead. It really wouldn't be a battle as the Cowgirls out scored the Grizzlies 18-10 down the stretch to come away with a 58-33 victory.
"It was good to play against someone different," said head coach Joe Legerski. "It gives you an opportunity to make sure what you're doing offensively is going to work and what we need to improve upon. I'm very happy with the effort tonight. I thought with several new players in the line-up, they really stepped up and I was pleased with the performance of some of our young players.
Two Cowgirls finished the night in double figures, including senior Ashley Elliott. She led the way with 12 points, along with a team high six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Guard Erin Hicks finished her night with 11 points and two assists, while shooting 4-6 from the field. As a team, UW was 17-50 (.340) from the field and out rebounded Adams State 37-30.
The Grizzlies were led by Jill French, who finished with seven points. She was followed by Katie Doherty and Meagan Hoffman with six points. Adams State shot 32.6 (14-43) percent from the field, but committed 24 turnovers.
The Cowgirls will play one more exhibition game before they begin regular season play. They will host the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, on Friday, Nov. 12, at 7:00 p.m. in Laramie.
