Laramie, Wyoming (Nov. 15, 2003) -- The Wyoming basketball team wrapped up the 2003-04 exhibition season with an 82-48 victory over the Si Tanka Huron Screaming Eagles, on Saturday afternoon, in Laramie.
After Si Tanka took an early 5-3 lead, the Cowgirls scored ten straight points to gain a 13-5 advantage. The Screaming Eagles responded with a couple of baskets to tie the score at 13, but UW answered with a 9-0 run to go up 22-13. Si Tanka was kept in the game by the three point shot as they hit a couple to pull within three, 22-19, unfortunately it was also helping the Cowgirls as a combined ten points from Tarah LaPar and Ashley Elliott gave them an eight point lead. From that point, the momentum really shifted towards the Cowgirls as they couldn't miss and Si Tanka couldn't hit. Wyoming out scored the Screaming Eagles 24-7 in the final six minutes of the half to take a 51-26 lead in to the locker room. Junior Ashley Elliott led all scorers with 16, while several Cowgirls recorded three rebounds for the half. The Cowgirls shot 21-34 (.618) from the field compared to 9-25 (.360) by the Screaming Eagles.
There wasn't a lot of scoring in the first several minutes of the second half as the two teams scored a combined ten points. With the score 56-31 in favor of UW, the Cowgirls went on an 18-8 run behind ten straight points from true freshman Annie Gorenstein to go up 74-39, while the scoring from Si Tanka came from Ruth Dreamer with eight points in that span. The Screaming Eagles made a small dent in the Wyoming lead with an 8-4 run to pull within 31 points, but it was still all Cowgirls to close out the game. At the final buzzer, it was Wyoming 82-48.
"We made progress from the first exhibition game," said head coach Joe Legerski. "I was really pleased with everyone's play today. It was a different look for us in facing a zone and the players executed well, plus we shot the ball well early in the game. That's the biggest thing against a zone that you have to be able to shoot the basketball and make those shots."
Three Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures, including junior Ashley Elliott. She finished with a team high 16 points and five assists. She was 6-13 from the field and 4-10 from the three-point line. Center Sara Hippen finished with 13 points and a team leading six rebounds, while freshman Annie Gorenstein recorded 12 points. As a team, Wyoming shot 35-64 (.547) from the field and out rebounded the Screaming Eagles 47-33.
The Screaming Eagles were led by Ruth Dreamer, who finished with a game high 28 points. She was 10-31 from the field and 8-23 from beyond the arc. Si Tanka struggled from the field shooting only 17-62 (.274) for the game.
The Cowgirls will open the regular season on the road next weekend as they will face the Denver Pioneers, on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., in Denver, Colo.
