LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Behind career nights from Dent, Lewis and Woodward, the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team defeated the Montana State Bobcats, 72-62, on Friday night in Laramie.
Four of five starters recorded double-figures led by sophomore Marquelle Dent. She finished with a career high 19 points. She was followed by Kayla Woodward with 17 points and a career high 15 rebounds. Fallon Lewis finished with 15 points and a career high 11 rebounds while Kaitlyn Mileto added 12 points. The Cowgirls shot 21-66 (.318) from the field and 25-38 (.658) from the free throw line.
Montana State was led by Jackie Elliott with 11 points and six rebounds, while Ausha Cole recorded ten points and six boards. Kalli Durham led the way for the Bobcats with ten rebounds. They were 25-82 (.305) from the field and 1-16 (.063) from beyond the arc.
"In tonight's basketball game, making shots was at a premium especially from the three-point line," said head coach Joe Legerski. "I thought Kayla hit one with about three minutes to go, put us up ten and gave us a little more breathing room. She and Kaitlyn can both shoot the basketball and I want them to keep shooting. Marquelle was tremendous tonight in transition, made great decisions on where to go with the basketball and shot well. The biggest difference in the basketball game tonight was her ability transition, convert to points and get to the free throw line. Also, Fallon with a double-double, who was one short on the rebound side against Denver and tonight she found two more."
Montana State hit the first basket of the game and scored the first nine of 11 points to take a 9-2 lead through the first media timeout. Woodward would finally hit the first field goal of the game for the Cowgirls at the 14:01 mark to make it 9-4. Wyoming would chip away at the deficit and go on a 9-2 run to even things up at 13 all with 11 minutes to go in the half. The Bobcats responded with five unanswered to pull ahead, 18-13. Over the next three minute stretch, Wyoming went on a 12-0 run to take their first lead of the game 25-18. Free throws by Alexa Dawkins ended the MSU scoring drought to make it a five-point contest, 25-20. Started by free throws by Chelan Landry the Cowgirls increased the lead with a 12-2 run making it 37-22. Montana State rallied back with nine straight points to close the gap to six, 37-31. Landry and Woodward hit shots to end close out the half as Wyoming took a 41-31 lead into the locker room.
Dent came out of the halftime break and scored the first six points for the Cowgirls to increase the lead to 47-35. The Bobcats scored four of the next six points to pull within ten, 49-39.
