SPOKANE, Wash. -
Despite a game-tying fourth quarter shot and 23-point effort from Marquelle Dent, the Wyoming basketball team (3-2 overall) lost in overtime 61-57 against the Gonzaga Bulldogs (5-3 overall) on Thursday night in Spokane.
Dent led the way with a season high 23 points and four assists in a 43 minute effort. Senior Jordan Kelley recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Marleah Campbell finished the night with a season high eight points coming in off the bench. Wyoming shot 21-of-61 (.344) from the field and 7-of-20 (.350) from beyond the arc.
"At halftime, the players put statements up on the board of what they needed to change in the second half. One of those things put up there was grit and they demonstrated that in the second half," UW head coach Joe Legerski said. "We only had one offensive rebound in the first half and responded with 13 led by Jordan (Kelley) with six. For her to have a double-double in this game an unbelievable effort. Our kids battled despite the size difference. Marquelle's effort was special with 23 points and our play off the bench was nice to see. Marleah (Campbell) came in, scored eight points and really played well. Riikka (Kujala) had a solid night when we went with a small line-up and attacked the basket."
Gonzaga was led by senior Shelby Cheslek with an 18 point, nine rebounds and six point night. Redshirt freshman Jill Barta finished with ten points and seven rebounds. The Bulldogs were 21-of-49 (.429) from the field and out rebounded UW, 40-29.
Roberts hit the first basket of the second half which was answered with a 7-4 run from the Bulldogs to extend the lead to eight, 41-33. UW tried to chip away at the deficit with five straight points, but Gonzaga pushed the lead back to nine, 49-40. Down 51-42, the Cowgirls scored seven unanswered to close the gap to two, 51-49. Over the next two minutes, neither team would score until a basket by Dent with six seconds left in the game tied up the score at 51 all and forced the overtime.
In the extra five minutes, the two teams each hit a free throw to get the score to 52 all. After a basket and free throw from Gonzaga made it a three-point contest, 52-55, Campbell hit a three to tie it up at 55. Unfortunately, a three from Tinkle and a free throw by Stirton made it a two possession game and the Bulldogs went on to the 61-57 victory.
Gonzaga opened up with game scoring the first two baskets. The Cowgirls pulled to within two mid first quarter 11-9, but the Bulldogs extended it back to seven, 18-11. Two Dent free throws made it a five point contest, 18-13. After a quick basket closed the gap to three, 18-15, Gonzaga went on a 9-3 run pushed the score to 27-18 with 5:04 in the second quarter. Dent scored seven straight to make it a two-point contest, 27-25. The Bulldogs hit the offensive boards and scored the final seven of nine to make it 34-27 at halftime.
Dent led all Cowgirl scorers at the half with 14 points followed by Roberts with five and Kelley with four. Wyoming shot 9-of-23 (.391) from the field but were out rebounded 19-8.
