Northridge, Calif. (Dec. 22, 2002) -- In their final game before the Christmas break, the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (6-2 overall) defeated the Cal State Northridge Matadors (0-9 overall), 97-75, on Sunday afternoon in Northridge, Calif.
After the Matadors scored the first basket of the game, the Cowgirls scored the next seven in a row to take a 7-2 lead. With the score 17-11 favoring Wyoming, Cal St. Northridge would go on an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game 19-17. It was short lived as the Cowgirls quickly regained the lead with a 14-7 lead to open up one of their largest leads of the half, 34-26. Wyoming continued to dominated in the final minutes of the half of the half by outscoring the Matadors, 11-8, to take a 45-34 advantage into halftime. Wyoming was led by Ashley Elliott and Lisa McCann, who finished with seven points, while Ann McColl recorded a eight rebounds. As a team, they shot 16-32 (.500) from the field and 10-13 (.769) from the free throw line.
It was all Cowgirls to begin the second half as they went on a 19-10 run to open up a 20-point lead, 64-44, but a run by the Matadors allowed them to close the game within 14 points. It was as close as they would get as Wyoming maintained that double-digit lead for the remainder of the half as Wyoming would go on to defeat Cal State Northridge by the final of 97-75.
Wyoming was led by Carrie Bacon, who finished the night with a team leading 17 points, while Ann McColl finished with a team high eight rebounds. As a team, they shot 35-64 (.547) from the field and 23-29 (.793) from the charity stripe.
The Cowgirls will now have a couple of days off before they return to action against the Weber State Wildcats, on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m., in the Arena Auditorium.
