Cowgirls Will Open MWC Play With Ranked Lobos in Laramie

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will begin the 2006-07 Mountain West Conference season at home this week as they welcome the New Mexico Lobos, on Thursday, Jan. 4. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium and will be broadcast on the Mtn. Sports Network.

The Cowgirls and the Lobos have met 50 times previously in this series. New Mexico leads the series 30-20 and has won the last seven of eight meetings. The last time the two teams met was Feb. 15, 2006 when the Cowgirls defeated the Lobos 59-52 in Laramie.

Wyoming is currently 9-3 overall after earning a split last week at the Lady Griz Classic in Missoula. They are led by Justyna Podziemska who is averaging a team leading 14.9 points, seven rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. Junior forward Hanna Zavecz follows with 14.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists, while Jodi Bolerjack is adding 13.6 points. The Cowgirls are shooting 293-655 (.447) from the field and 106-269 (.394) from beyond the arc. They currently rank first in the MWC in field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage.

The Lobos are currenlty 10-3 overall, while being ranked 25th in the Associated Press Poll. They are led by Julie Briody who is averaging a team leading 17.5 points, while adding 5.2 rebounds per game. She is followed by Dionne Marsh who is adding 14.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. They return three starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 22-10 overall and 11-5 in the MWC a year ago. They are coached by Don Flanagan, who is in his 12th season with the program.

Don't forget that Thursday's contest is Two for One and Bring Your "A" Game. Any student bringing a report card with an "A" will receive $3.00 admission. Also, Wyoming residents may buy an adult ticket and get one adult or youth ticket free. Tickets must be purchased prior to game day.
