The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will begin the 2010 Mountain West Conference season on Tuesday, January 5, against the Colorado State Rams in Fort Collins. The game is set to tip off at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on The Mountain Sports Network (Channel 412 on Bresnan Cable in Laramie).
The Cowgirls will enter Tuesday's game with a 9-3 overall record after suffering a 73-67 defeat against Boise State on the road last time out. Four Cowgirls are scoring in double-figures so far led by junior Aubrey Vandiver with a team leading 14.8 points and 9.5 rebounds. She is followed by junior Hillary Carlson with 13.5 points and 2.3 blocks, while Emma Langford is adding 10.8 points and Kristen Scheffler with 10.7 points per game.
Carlson ranks first in blocks and tenth in scoring while being ranked third in field goal percentage and fourth in free throw percentage in the Mountain West Conference. Vandiver ranks among the Top 15 in points, rebounds, steals and field goal percentage, while Langford is 13th in assists and 19th in scoring.
Colorado State is currently 8-5 overall entering this week's game. The Rams are led by Kim Mestdagh who is averaging 17.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, while Megan Heimstra leads the way with a team high 8.8 rebounds while adding 8.3 points.
They welcome back one starter and seven letterwinners to a team that went 9-20 overall and 4-12 in the MWC last season. This is the 81st meeting between the two teams. CSU leads the series 41-39. The last time the two teams met was March 10, 2009 as the Rams defeated the Cowgirls 64-56 at the MWC Tournament. Colorado State is coached by Kristen Holt who is in her second season with the program.
