The Wyoming women's basketball team will open up Mountain West Conference play today on the road against the UNLV Lady Rebels beginning at 8:00 p.m. MT.
The Cowgirls are 10-1 overall and on an eight game winning streak after a 78-60 victory over Idaho State in their final non-conference game. Wyoming is led in scoring by sophomore Hanna Zavecz who is averaging 14.5 points along with four assists and 2.6 steals per game. Freshman Megan McGuffey is the Cowgirls leading rebounder with six per game while chipping in ten points per game. Wyoming enters the week ranked first in the conference in scoring defense allowing just 48.8 points per game and is among the top three in several other categories in the league.
The Lady Rebels are currently 8-3 overall. This is their opening conference game of the year as well. They are led by Sheena Moore who is averaging 12.3 points and 3.8 assists per game. They come in to this season with four returning starters and 11 letterwinners from a team that went 16-15 overall and 6-8 in the MWC a year ago.
This will be the 22nd meeting between the two schools. UNLV leads the series 15-6. The last time the two teams met was March 9, 2005 as the Lady Rebels defeated the Cowgirls, 64-59, at the MWC Tournament in Denver. UNLV is coached by Regina Miller who is in her eighth year with the program.
Just a reminder that youth will have an opportunity to experience the college game-day atmosphere when the University of Wyoming hosts NCAA® Basketball's 11th Anniversary Take A Kid to the Game® (TAKG) day celebration, on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006. There will be a carnival prior to the women's basketball game on Saturday to celebrate Take a Kid to the Game. The carnival is set to begin at noon and run until 1:30 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex followed by the Cowgirl game against TCU at 2:00 p.m. There will be inflatables and face painting, along with a ring toss, cake walk, balloon burst, prizes and much more.
