For the second straight year, the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will open up the Mountain West Conference season against the Colorado State Rams. The game is set for Wednesday, January 5, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. Live stats can be followed or audio can be found on www.wyomingathletics.com.
Wyoming is currently 9-3 on the season after a 69-53 victory over the Montana Western Lady Bulldogs in an exhibition game in Rock Springs last Thursday night. Hillary Carlson is leading the way with 18.5 points and 7.4 rebounds, while Aubrey Vandiver follows with 17.3 points and 10.1 rebounds. The Cowgirls are shooting .419 (278-664) from the field, 89-246 (.362) from beyond the arc and 143-199 (.719) from the charity stripe.
Carlson ranks second in scoring, third in blocked shots and field goal percentage while being eighth in rebounding in the Mountain West Conference. Vandiver is among the Top 15 in points, rebounds, assists, minutes played, field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage while senior Jade Kennedy is first in minutes played, third in assist/turnover ratio and eighth in assists.
The Rams are currently 7-6 overall and coming off a 66-43 loss against Pepperdine last time out. This is their conference opener as well. They are led by Kim Mestdagh, who is averaging a team leading 18.0 points plus 5.5 rebounds. She is followed by Sam Martin who is adding 12.4 points and 6.8 rebounds. They return four starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 13-17 overall and 5-11 in the MWC a year ago.
This is the 83rd meeting between the two schools. The series is all tied up at 41 games. The last time the two teams met was Feb. 6, 2010 as the Cowgirls defeated the Rams, 69-52, in Laramie. Colorado State is coached by Kristen Holt who is in her third season with the program.
