The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will open up the 2009 Mountain West Conference season this week as they host the Utah Utes, on Wednesday, Jan. 7. The game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on The Mtn. Sports Network (Channel 412 in Laramie).
The Cowgirls will enter this game with an 8-5 overall record after closing out the non-conference season with a convincing 82-60 victory over the San Francisco Dons on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Hillary Carlson led the way with a career high 22 points, while senior Megan McGuffey also chipped in 22 in the victory.
Three Cowgirls are scoring in double-figures so far this season led by freshman Emma Langford with 12.3 points per game. She is followed by guard Megan McGuffey with 12.1 points and Kristen Scheffler with 10.3 points. McGuffey also leads the way with 6.8 rebounds per contest.
Langford, who currently leads the team in points, assists, steals and minutes played, ranks in the Top 15 in each of those categories in the Mountain West Conference. Scheffler leads the league in three-point field goals made (2.69 per game), while being ranked 12th in percentage (35-93, .376) and 20th in scoring. McGuffey is eighth in rebounding, 11th in assists and 14th in scoring as well.
The Utes come in to the game with a 7-6 record overall this season while riding a three-game winning streak. Morgan Warburton leads the way averaging 19.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, while Kalee Whipple is adding 17 points and 6.3 boards.
They return three starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 27-5 overall and 16-0 in the MWC a year ago. This is the 64th meeting between the two teams. Utah leads the series 55-8, and has a current two game winning streak. The last time the two teams met was March 2, 2008 as the Utes defeated the Cowgirls 67-53 in Salt Lake City. Utah is coached by Elaine Elliott who is in her 26th season with the program.
