The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will open up the Mountain West Conference season against the UNLV Lady Rebels. The game is set for Wednesday, January 11, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. Live stats can be followed or audio can be found on www.wyomingathletics.com.
Wyoming enters the game 4-9 overall after suffering a 65-43 loss against Eastern Michigan in their final non-conference game on Jan. 2. The Cowgirls are led by junior Ashley Sickles who leads the team with 13.1 points plus 6.5 rebounds per game. Chaundra Sewell follows with 12.7 points and a team and league leading 9.2 rebounds, while Kaitlyn Mileto is adding 10.1 points. As a team, they are shooting 259-695 (.373) from the field and 53-235 (.226) from beyond the arc.
Sickles currently ranks first in minutes played, sixth in scoring, eighth in blocked shots and tenth in rebounding. Sewell is among the Top 15 in points, rebounds assists, steals, blocked shots and field goal percentage, while freshman Kaitlyn Mileto is third in minutes played, 11th in three-point field goal percentage and 14th in scoring.
UNLV enters the week 12-4 overall after closing out the non-conference season with a 73-71 win over Fresno State. Kelli Thompson leads the way with 12.9 points plus 3.2 rebounds per game. Lenita Sanford is adding 11.4 points and 7.4 rebounds, while Jamie Smith leads the way with 8.6 boards. They return five starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 11-20 overall and 4-12 in the Mountain West a year ago.
This is the 35th meeting between the two teams. UNLV leads the series 19-15. The last time the two teams met was Feb. 26, 2011 as the Cowgirls earned a 77-56 victory. UNLV is coached by Kathy Olivier who is in her fourth year with the program.
