The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team will host their first home conference game of the season on Saturday, January 12, against the TCU Lady Frogs. The game is set to tip off at 1:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on The Mtn. Sports Network.
In addition, the University of Wyoming Athletics Department is hosting the eighth annual Take a Kid to the Game carnival in conjunction with the NCAA in the UniWyo Sports Complex prior to the game. The event starts at 11:00 a.m. and will include a special appearance by the official mascot of NCAA Basketball, JJ Jumper, plus games and prizes for everyone.
Wyoming is currently 13-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play after a thrilling 58-52 victory over the New Mexico Lobos on Wednesday night. They are also currently ranked 21st in the Associated Press Poll and 22nd in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll. Senior Hanna Zavecz leads the way with 14.7 points and 4.1 assists. She is followed by fellow senior Justyna Podziemska who is adding 12.4 points and 5.4 rebounds, while Aubrey Vandiver is chipping in 11.6 points and a team leading 6.7 rebounds per game. The Cowgirls are shooting .409 (300-733) from the field and .704 (193-274) from the free throw line.
TCU is currently 8-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play after a convincing 86-63 win against San Diego State to open up conference play. They are led by Adrianne Ross who is averaging 15.1 points and 3.8 rebounds. She is followed by Lorie Rayford-Butler who is adding 10.9 points and 7.8 rebounds. They return three starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 21-11 overall and 11-5 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. This is the 11th meeting between the two schools. The series is tied up at 5-5. The last time the two teams met was February 22, 2007 as the Cowgirls defeated the Lady Frogs, 61-50, in Ft. Worth. TCU is coached by Jeff Mittie who is in his ninth season with the program.
The pre-game carnival runs from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and admission is a game ticket to the Cowgirl basketball game ($10 for adults and $6 for children 18 and under). The first 250 kids will receive free admission to the game and carnival courtesy of Pepsi Kids Day. Tickets can be picked up anytime prior to the game at the main UW Ticket Office in the Arena Auditorium, while supplies last.
