The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will head out on the road for the first time in conference play this week. They will take on the San Diego State Aztecs, on Wednesday, Jan. 14 in San Diego. The game is set to tip off at 8 p.m. Mountain Time.
The Cowgirls will enter this game with an 8-6 overall record and 0-1 in conference play after falling in their conference opener 70-52 against Utah. Sophomore Hillary Carlson led the way with 19 points followed by Kristen Scheffler with 11.
Three Cowgirls are scoring in double-figures so far this season led by freshman Emma Langford and senior Megan McGuffey with 11.6 points per game. Kristen Scheffler is adding 10.4 points, while McGuffey also leads the way with 6.8 rebounds per contest.
Langford, who currently leads the team in assists, steals and minutes played, ranks in the Top 15 in each of those categories in the Mountain West Conference. Scheffler leads the league in three-point field goals made (2.57 tpfgm), while being ranked 20th in scoring. McGuffey is 11th in assists and rebounding along with being 13th in scoring as well.
The Aztecs come in to the game with a 10-4 record overall and 1-1 in conference play this season while winning the last six of seven games. Jene Morris leads the way with 15.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, while Paris Johnson is adding 15.1 points and a team leading 8.5 boards.
They return all five starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 18-13 overall and 7-9 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. This is the 36th meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 20-15 and has won three out of the last four games. The last time the two teams met was March 12, 2008 as the Aztecs defeated the Cowgirls 66-54 in the opening round of the MWC Tournament. SDSU is coached by Beth Burns who is in her 11th season with the program.
