The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will look to earn their first conference victory of the season as they return home to host the UNLV Lady Rebels, on Saturday, January 17. The game is set to tip off at 1:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on The Mountain Sports Network.
The Cowgirls will enter this game with an 8-7 overall record and 0-2 in Mountain West Conference play after losing to San Diego State, 49-42, on Wednesday night. Freshman Kristen Scheffler led the way with 12 points followed by Elisabeth Dissen with ten.
Three Cowgirls are scoring in double-figures so far this season led by senior Megan McGuffey with 11.5 points per game. Emma Langford is averaging 10.8 points while Kristen Scheffler is adding 10.4 points per game. McGuffey also leads the way with 6.4 rebounds per contest.
McGuffey ranks 11th in rebounding and 14th in scoring in the league. Langford, who currently leads the team in assists and steals, ranks in the Top 15 in each of those categories in the MWC. Scheffler leads the league in three-point field goals made (2.53 tpfgm), while being ranked 20th in scoring.
UNLV comes into the game with a 7-9 record overall and 0-3 in MWC play this season. Shamela Hampton leads the way with 14.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, while Erica Helms is adding 11.1 points and 2.3 boards.
UNLV returns four starters and 11 letterwinners to a team that went 8-22 overall and 4-12 in the MWC a year ago. This is the 28th meeting between the two teams. UNLV leads the series 17-10, but the Cowgirls have won three straight. The last time the two teams met was Feb. 23, 2008 as Wyoming defeated the Lady Rebels, 88-78, in Las Vegas. UNLV is coached by Kathy Olivier who is in her first season with the program.
