The Cowgirl basketball team is on the road for their first game of the week as they travel to Las Vegas. They will face the UNLV Lady Rebels on Wednesday, Jan. 26, beginning at 8:00 p.m. Mountain Time. Live stats can be followed or audio can be found on www.wyomingathletics.com.
Wyoming is currently 14-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play after a 42-point win, 96-54, over Air Force on Saturday afternoon. Hillary Carlson leads the team in scoring with 17.9 points per game, while adding 7.3 rebounds. Aubrey Vandiver follows closely with 17.3 points and a team leading 9.2 rebounds per game. The Cowgirls are shooting .437 (430-985) from the field, 132-369 (.358) from beyond the arc and 215-308 (.698) from the charity stripe.
Carlson ranks first in blocked shots, second in scoring and field goal percentage while being eighth in rebounding in the Mountain West Conference. Vandiver is among the Top 12 in points, rebounds, assists, minutes played, field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage while senior Jade Kennedy is second in assist/turnover ratio, minutes played and fifth in assists.
The Lady Rebels are currently 9-11 overall and 2-4 in the MWC. They are led by Kelli Thompson who is averaging 13.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. She is followed by Jamie Smith who is adding 8.2 points and a team leading eight rebounds. They return five starters and 11 letterwinners to a team that went 13-18 overall and 6-10 in the MWC last year.
This is the 33rd meeting between the two schools. UNLV leads the series 19-13. The last time the two teams met was March 9, 2010 as the Cowgirls defeated the Lady Rebels, 60-55, in opening round of the MWC tournament. UNLV is coached by Kathy Olivier who is in her third season with the program.
