The Cowgirl basketball team will finish out the week as they host the San Diego State Aztecs, on Saturday, Jan. 29. The game is set to tip off at 1:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on The Mountain Sports Network. Check your local listings for the game in your area. Wyoming is currently 15-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play after an eight point road victory, 69-61, over UNLV on Wednesday night. Hillary Carlson leads the team in scoring with 18.8 points per game, while adding 7.5 rebounds. Aubrey Vandiver follows closely with 16.8 points and a team leading 9.1 rebounds per game. The Cowgirls are shooting .437 (454-1039) from the field, 140-391 (.358) from beyond the arc and 228-330 (.691) from the charity stripe.
Carlson ranks first in blocked shots and scoring, second in field goal percentage while being seventh in rebounding in overall games. Vandiver is among the Top 12 in points, rebounds, assists, minutes played, field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage while senior Jade Kennedy is second in minutes played, third in assist/turnover ratio and sixth in assists. In league games, Carlson is first in scoring and blocked shots, second in field goal percentage and fourth in rebounding. Vandiver is second in scoring and sixth in rebounding.
The Aztecs are currently 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the MWC after a 65-55 loss the last time out against BYU. They are led by Pairs Johnson who is averaging a team high 15.2 points and 8.1 rebounds. She is followed by Courtney Clements who is adding 12.1 points. They return three starters and six letterwinners to a team that went 23-11 overall and 10-6 in the MWC last year.
This is the 41st meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 22-18. The last time the two teams met was March 10, 2010 as the Aztecs defeated the Cowgirls, 60-51, in the second round of the MWC tournament. The two teams split the regular season series in 2010. SDSU is coached by Beth Burns who is in her 14th season with the program.
UW Athletics will be giving away 1,000 free T-shirts to the first 1,000 fans to enter the Arena-Auditorium on Saturday. Saturday is also "Youth Day". An adult who purchases one regular-priced adult ticket to Saturday's game may bring as many children, 6th grade and under, into the game for free. Adult tickets are $12. "Youth Day" tickets will be on sale up to two hours prior to tip off. Saturday's game tips off at 1:30 p.m. at the Arena-Auditorium.
