Cowgirl Basketball To Hit The Road For Two Games

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming women's basketball team will head out on the road this week with two Mountain West Conference games. They will face the New Mexico Lobos, on Thursday, Feb. 3, in Albuquerque, and the Air Force Academy Falcons, on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 5, in Colorado Springs. The game against UNM is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m., while the game against Air Force is set for 2:00 p.m.

The Cowgirls enter this week's competition with an overall record of 12-6 and 3-2 in the MWC after a ten point loss to the Colorado State Rams last Friday night. Wyoming is currently led by senior Ashley Elliott, who is averaging 16.9 points and 4.2 assists per game. She is followed closely by Hanna Zavecz with 15.1 points and 6.6 rebounds and guard Erin Hicks with 10.3 points and a team leading 7.1 rebounds. As a team, they are shooting 365-968 (.377) from the field and 225-305 (.738) from the charity stripe, while averaging 60.2 points per game.

New Mexico enters the week with a 15-3 overall record and a 4-1 mark in the MWC. The Lobos are led by Lindsey Arndt, who is averaging 10.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. As a team, UNM is shooting 399-962 (.415) from the field and averaging 64.5 points per game. They return four starters and 11 letterwinners to a team that went 23-8 overall and 12-2 in the MWC a year ago.

This will be the 47th meeting between the two schools. New Mexico leads the series 27-19 and have won the last four meetings. The last time the two schools met was March 12, 2004 when the Lobos defeated the Cowgirls, 51-44, in the second round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Denver.

Air Force is 6-12 overall and 1-4 in the MWC and will face the CSU Rams on Thursday night before taking on the Cowgirls. The Falcons are led by Letricia Castillo, who is averaging 11.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. As a team, they are shooting 390-1032 (.378) from the field, while averaging 61.6 points per game. They return three starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 3-25 overall and 0-14 in the MWC a year ago.

This will be the 26th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 24-1. The last time the two teams met was March 6, 2004 when the Cowgirls defeated the Falcons, 65-44, in Colorado Springs.
