The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will begin the second part of the Mountain West Conference season on Saturday, Feb. 6, as they host the Colorado State Rams. The game is set to tip off at 2 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game as part of the WBCA's Pink Zone initiative. The annual campaign is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
The Cowgirls will enter the game with a 13-7 overall record and a 4-4 mark in conference play after 62-56 loss against the UNLV Lady Rebels on Tuesday night. Three Cowgirls are scoring in double-figures so far led by junior Hillary Carlson who is averaging a team leading 14.8 points and 2.5 blocks per game. She is followed by fellow junior Aubrey Vandiver with 13.6 points and a team leading 9.4 rebounds per game, while Emma Langford is adding 11.7 points and 3.4 assists.
Carlson ranks first in blocks and fifth in scoring while being ranked first in field goal percentage and eighth in free throw percentage in the MWC. Vandiver ranks among the Top 15 in points, rebounds, steals, field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage while Langford is 12th in assists and 14th in scoring.
The Rams are currently 11-10 overall and 3-5 in the MWC after a 68-65 loss against the Utah Utes on Wednesday night in Fort Collins. They are led by Kim Mestdagh who is averaging a team leading 17 points along with 5.3 rebounds. Chatilla van Grinsven follows with 11.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
They welcome back one starter and seven letterwinners to a team that went 9-20 overall and 4-12 in the MWC last season. This is the 82nd meeting between the two teams. CSU leads the series 41-40. The last time the two teams met was January 5, 2010 as the Cowgirls defeated the Rams, 64-61, in Ft. Collins. Colorado State is coached by Kristen Holt who is in her second season with the program.
In conjunction with the game, the University of Wyoming Athletics Department is sponsoring the Sixth Annual Walk for Women. Along with the walk, a silent auction will be held with all proceeds from the event directly benefiting the Wyoming Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The walk will be held in the Arena Auditorium Concourse with registration set to begin at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $30.00 per person and all participants will receive a t-shirt and lunch along with free admission to the Wyoming vs. Colorado State game.
