The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team will start the second half of the Mountain West Conference season on the road this weekend. They will travel to Salt Lake City to face the Utah Utes, on Sunday, February 8. The game time is set for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on CBS C (Channel 27 on Bresnan Cable in Laramie).
The Cowgirls will enter this game with an 11-10 overall record and 3-5 in conference play after a thrilling 52-50 victory over New Mexico on Wednesday night. In the win, sophomore Hillary Carlson led the way with 16 points and five rebounds, while Emma Langford chipped in 12 points and Kristen Scheffler had nine.
Four Cowgirls are scoring in double-figures so far this season led by sophomore Hillary Carlson who is averaging 11 points and 4.5 rebounds. Guard Kristen Scheffler is close behind with 10.9 points per game, while Megan McGuffey and Emma Langford follow with 10.6 and 10.1 points per game. McGuffey leads the team with six rebounds per contest.
Carlson ranks fourth in the league in field goal percentage and 15th in scoring, while Scheffler leads the league in three-point field goals made (2.62 tpfgm) and is 16th in scoring. McGuffey ranks 13th in rebounding and 19th in scoring.
In conference games, Carlson is fourth in scoring (15.9 ppg), fifth in field goal percentage 943-89, .483) and 11th in rebounding. Scheffler is second in three-point field goals made and minutes played, while being 12th in scoring (11.8 ppg).
The Utes come in to the game with a 15-6 record overall, 8-0 in the MWC this season, while riding an eight-game winning streak. Morgan Warburton leads the way averaging 18.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while Kalee Whipple is adding 16.7 points and 6.5 boards.
They return three starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 27-5 overall and 16-0 in the MWC a year ago. This is the 65th meeting between the two teams. Utah leads the series 56-8 and has a three-game winning streak. The last time the two teams met was January 7, 2009 as the Utes defeated the Cowgirls 70-52 in Laramie. Utah is coached by Elaine Elliott who is in her 26th season with the program.
