LARAMIE, Wyo. -
For the second time in three weeks, freshman forward Kayla Woodward has earned Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors for games played from Jan. 30-Feb. 5, 2012. It is the second weekly award of the season for Woodward in her rookie season.
The last freshman women's basketball player to earn multiple weekly honors in the Mountain West was TCU's Helena Sverrisdottir in 2007-08 (Feb. 11 co-, Feb. 18), while the last Wyoming freshman to earn multiple MW weekly honors was Aubrey Vandiver in 2006-07 (Jan. 22, Feb. 26).
Woodward, a 5-11 freshman from Sheridan, Wyo., led the Cowgirls to a 2-0 record last week with wins over TCU (64-54) and UNLV (51-47, OT) to move into a three-way tie for third place in the Mountain West standings. She averaged 18.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists, while shooting 56.0 percent (14-25) from the field and 77.8 (7-9) from the free throw line in the two contests.
Woodward began the week with a 21-point performance at home on Wednesday against the Horned Frogs, shooting 70.0 percent from the field (7-10) which included 2-3 from three-point range. She scored the Cowgirls first three-point field goal in the first half to put UW up 16-12 and scored four of the final six points of the half to go into halftime with a one-point lead, 30-29. Woodward started the second half with 11 of the first 17 UW points to build a 46-38 lead which the Cowgirls never relinquished in the second half.
On Saturday, Woodward led the Cowgirls to a road upset of the Lady Rebels with a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds. In a low-scoring first half, 19-15, she had six points to keep the Cowgirls in the hunt. In the second half, down by 10 at 27-17, Woodward made a layup to end an 8-0 run by UNLV and give the Cowgirls a lift. With UNLV up 38-35 with 3:52 remaining, she scored four of the next six points to give Wyoming a 41-40 lead. In overtime, she upped the Cowgirl lead to 47-43, the final win margin.
