Four Cowgirl Basketball Players Earn Academic All-District VII Honors

Four University of Wyoming Cowgirl basketball players were named on Thursday to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII Teams. Seniors Justyna Podziemska and Hanna Zavecz made First Team All-District VII, while junior Megan McGuffey was honored on the Second Team and sophomore Aubrey Vandiver received Third Team honors. Podziemska and Zavecz will now advance to the Academic All-American ballot.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team is a part of the Academic All-America program. Student-athletes are selected in voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA District VII is made up of the states of Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

To qualify, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of 3.20 cumulative grade-point average, must be at least a sophomore and must have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's games.

Podziemska, who carries a 3.79 GPA in economics and finance with a minor in international business, earned Academic All-Conference and Scholar Athlete honors last year. She was selected Second Team All-MWC and the MWC Newcomer of the Year as well. A two-year starter for the Cowgirls, she has started in every game this season and is averaging 12.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest. She ranks among the Top 15 in six categories in league games. Podziemska has also moved in to the Cowgirl record book as she sits in sixth all-time in three-point field goals made (131), eighth in attempts (363) and 12th in blocked shots (50).

Zavecz is a three-time Academic All-MWC and Scholar Athlete selection, while carrying a 3.47 GPA in family and consumer science with a minor in public relations. She has also earned First Team All-MWC honors the past two years and was named the MWC Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. Last season, she was named to the 2006-07 WBCA Honorable Mention All-American Team and the MWC All-Tournament Team, while being named the MVP of the 2007 WNIT. She currently averages a team leading 14.1 points, 3.8 assists and 1.8 blocks. Zavecz also ranks among the best in the MWC and the Top 10 at Wyoming in 11 all-time statistical categories.

McGuffey is a two-time Academic All-MWC and Scholar Athlete selection, while carrying a 3.77 GPA in family and consumer sciences. She has played in 19 games this season and is averaging 3.5 points and two rebounds per game. She earned MWC Newcomer of the Year honors after averaging 8.6 points and 5.4 rebounds as a freshman, while earning Player of the Week honors twice during her career. McGuffey recorded a career high 28 points against Western State (12/9/06) and earned the Barry Crater Sportsmanship award in that same game.

Vandiver has a current GPA of 3.80 in Spanish and is a member of the honors program. She earned Academic All-MWC and Scholar Athlete honors her freshman year and MWC Player of the Week three-times during her career. She has played in all 21 games this season for the Cowgirls and 57 for her career. Vandiver is averaging 11.7 points and a team leading 6.7 rebounds off the bench. This season, she earned MVP honors at the Hawkeye Challenge and recorded a career high 25 points and 12 rebounds against Denver. She has also has led the team in rebounding 11 times, scoring five times and finished with five double-doubles.
