The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team will return home this week for one game. They will host the San Diego State Aztecs, on Sunday, Feb. 15. The game time is set for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on The Mountain Sports Network (Channel 412 on Bresnan Cable in Laramie). Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game. The WBCA's Pink Zone initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
The Cowgirls will enter this game with an 11-11 overall record and 3-6 in Mountain West Conference play after recently falling to the top team in the conference, the Utah Utes, 64-57, last Sunday afternoon. Freshman Emma Langford led the way with 20 points and five rebounds, while Megan McGuffey chipped in 14 points and five rebounds, and Kristen Scheffler added seven points.
Four Cowgirls are scoring in double-figures so far this season led by senior Megan McGuffey and freshman Kristen Scheffler who are both averaging 10.7 points each. Sophomore Hillary Carlson and forward Emma Langford follow closely with 10.6 points per game. McGuffey also leads the way with 5.9 rebounds per contest.
Carlson ranks fourth in the league in field goal percentage and 19th in scoring, while Scheffler leads the league in three-point field goals made (2.59 tpfgm) and 18th in scoring. McGuffey ranks 13th in rebounding and 17th in scoring.
In conference games, Carlson is fifth in scoring (14.6 ppg), eighth in field goal percentage (45-97, .464) and 11th in rebounding. Scheffler is second in three-point field goals made, fourth in minutes played, while being 12th in scoring (11.2 ppg).
The Aztecs come in to the game with a 17-5 record overall and 8-2 in MWC play this season after earning a 55-49 victory over the Utah Utes on Wednesday night. They have won their last seven of eight heading into this game including the last four in a row. Paris Johnson is adding 15.3 points and a team leading 8.7 boards, while Jene Morris is adding 13.7 points and three boards.
They return all five starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 18-13 overall and 7-9 in the MWC a year ago. This is the 37th meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 20-16, but the Aztecs have won the last two games. The last time the two teams met was January 14, 2009 as the Aztecs defeated Wyoming 49-42 in San Diego. SDSU is coached by Beth Burns who is in her 11th season with the program.
In conjunction with the game, the University of Wyoming Athletics Department is sponsoring the Fifth Annual Walk for Women. Along with the walk, a silent auction will be held with all proceeds from the event directly benefiting the Wyoming Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The walk will be held in the Arena Auditorium Concourse with registration set to begin at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $30.00 per person and all participants will receive a t-shirt and lunch along with free admission to the Wyoming vs. San Diego State WBB game at 2 p.m. Registration can be completed at www.wyomingathletics.com, the University of Wyoming Athletics Department, or on the day of the walk.
