Cowgirls Host Cougars Thursday in Highly Anticipated Matchup

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will play two games in Mountain West Conference action this week. They will host the BYU Cougars, on Thursday, Feb. 15, and then head out on the road for a match up with the San Diego State Aztecs, on Sunday, Feb. 18. The BYU game is set for a 7 p.m. tip off while the San Diego State game is set to begin at 3 p.m. Mountain Time.

Wyoming is currently 16-6 overall and 7-3 in MWC play after earning a 85-59 victory against the UNLV Lady Rebels last weekend. They are led by Justyna Podziemska who is averaging 14.2 points and 6.9 rebounds. Junior forward Hanna Zavecz follows with 13.7 points, 3.6 assists and 1.5 steals, while Jodi Bolerjack is adding 10.8 points. The Cowgirls are shooting 500-1163 (.430) from the field, 171-466 (.367) from beyond the arc and 287-374 (.767) from the free throw line.

The Cougars are currently 17-6 overall and 8-2 in conference play so far this season. They are led by Dani Wright who is averaging 13.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. She is followed by Mallary Gillespie who is adding 12.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. They return four starters and five letterwinners to a team that went 26-6 overall, 13-3 in the Mountain West Conference, while advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Cowgirls and the Cougars have met 61 times previously in this series. BYU leads the series 43-18. Wyoming has won four of the last seven meetings between the two. The last time the two teams met was January 13, 2007 when the Cougars defeated the Cowgirls 55-52 in Provo. They are coached by Jeff Judkins who is in his sixth season with the program.

The Aztecs are currently 11-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play and will take on the Air Force Academy Falcons before facing the Cowgirls. They are led by Jennifer Layton who is averaging 10.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. She is followed by Quenese Davis who is adding 10.1 points and 4.8 rebounds a contest. They return three starters and six letterwinners to a team that went 3-24 overall and 0-16 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. The Cowgirls and the Aztecs have met 30 times previously in this series. Wyoming leads the series 17-13 and has won the last 12 straight. The last time the two teams met was January 17, 2007 when the Cowgirls defeated the Aztecs, 71-47, in Laramie. They are coached by Beth Burns who is in her tenth season.
