The Wyoming women's basketball team returns home this week to host the league leading San Diego State Aztecs. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium. Live stats and audio can be found at www.gowyo.com.
The Cowgirls are currently 19-5 overall and 8-3 in MW play after splitting their road trip with Nevada and Fresno State last week. Four of five starters are averaging double-figures led by Chaundra Sewell. She is averaging 15.0 points and a league leading 9.6 rebounds. Kayla Woodward follows closely with 14.5 points and 6.2 rebounds while Kaitlyn Mileto is adding 12.5 points. Senior Ashley Sickles is chipping in 11.0 points and 5.4 boards as well.
Wyoming is first in the league in scoring offense (71.7 ppg), rebounding margin (+8.0) and assists (16.0 aspg). They are also shooting 618-1361 (.454) from the field and 154-407 (.378) from beyond the arc. Both rank first in the league. In Mountain West games, they are first in scoring offense assists and field goal percentage, second in free throw percentage, rebounding margin and scoring defense.
SDSU enters the contest with a 19-5 overall record and 10-1 in the MW, plus is on a ten-game winning streak. Last time out, the Aztecs defeated UNLV 86-50. They are led by Courtney Clements who is averaging a team high 16.8 points plus 5.2 rebounds. Chelsea Hopkins follows with 13.5 points and a team high 7.5 rebounds. They return four starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 25-7 overall, 12-2 in the MW and made it to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
This will be the 47th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 24-22. The last time the two teams met was Jan. 19, 2013 as the Aztecs defeated the Cowgirls 66-43. The Aztecs are coached by Beth Burns.
