In one of their two final regular season games, the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will host the San Diego State Aztecs, on Thursday, March 2. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
The Cowgirls, who are currently receiving votes in the AP poll, are 19-6 overall and 9-5 in MWC play after a 78-71 over their MWC rival Colorado State Rams on Saturday. Wyoming is led in scoring and rebounding by sophomore Hanna Zavecz who is averaging 14.2 points and 6.3 rebounds along with 3.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game. She is followed by Jodi Bolerjack with 13.1 points per game and Erin Hicks with 8.7 points per game. Wyoming is shooting 510-1329 (.384) from the field and 332-468 (.709) from the free throw line so far this season. They are also ranked fourth in the country in turnovers with only 12.8 a game and 12th in scoring defense giving up just 54.5 points a contest.
The Aztecs are currently 3-22 overall and 0-15 in the MWC. SDSU is led by Michelle Strawberry who is averaging 13.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. They come in to this season with two returning starters and five letterwinners from a team that went 8-20 overall and 2-12 in the MWC a year ago.
This will be the 29th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 15-13 and has won the last ten meetings in a row. The last time the two teams met was Jan. 28, 2006 as Wyoming defeated the Aztecs, 64-53, in San Diego. The Aztecs are coached by Beth Burns who is in her ninth year with the program.
A quick note that faculty and staff are eligible to purchase two $3 tickets (normally $7.00 each) for the Saturday, March 4th Cowgirls vs. Utah basketball game by showing your ID at the Union Ticket Counter or the UW Ticket Office. Tickets must be purchased prior to the close of business Friday, March 3rd.
Also, all Cowgirl fans are invited to attend a Fan Appreciation Day prior to the game in the Rochelle Athletics Center. Food and beverages are compliments of the Cowboy Joe Club. The reception starts at noon on Saturday, March 4 and will be followed by the Cowgirls vs. Utah game at 2 p.m.
