For the first time in MWC tournament history, the Wyoming women's basketball team will face the TCU Lady Frogs in the opening round of the XBOX Live 2006 Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Championships, on Wednesday, March 8th, at 8:30 p.m. in Denver, Colo. The Cowgirls enter this week as the fifth seed while the Lady Frogs are the fourth seed in the tournament
The Cowgirls enter this week's competition with an overall record of 20-7 overall and 10-6 in the MWC after a split last week against San Diego State and Utah. Wyoming is currently led by sophomore Hanna Zavecz, who is averaging 14.0 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. She is followed closely by Jodi Bolerjack with 13.1 points and guard Erin Hicks with nine points. As a team, they are shooting 561-1434 (.391) from the field and 363-512 (.709) from the charity stripe, while averaging 62.0 points per game.
TCU enters the week as the fourth seed with a 17-10 overall record and an 11-5 mark in the MWC. They are led by Natasha Lacy, who is averaging 14.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. As a team, they are shooting 628-1617 (.388) from the field and out rebounding their opponents 38.8 to 37.6.
This will be the eighth meeting between the two schools. TCU leads the series, 4-3. The last time the two teams met was Feb. 8, 2006 when the Lady Frogs defeated the Cowgirls, 67-59, in Ft. Worth. Wyoming won the earlier contest this season on Jan. 7, 2006 when they defeated the Lady Frogs, 68-67, in Laramie. TCU is coached by Jeff Mittie who is in his seventh season with the program.
