LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Two members of the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team were recognized on Monday as the Mountain West Conference announced the 2007 All-Conference Team.
Junior Hanna Zavecz earned First Team All-Conference for the second year in a row, while forward Justyna Podziemska was named to Second Team All-Conference and garnered Newcomer of the Year honors in her first season with the Cowgirls.
"With team success comes individual success as well," said UW head coach Joe Legerski. `Hanna and Justyna have been a vital part of our team this season and their honors are very deserving."
Zavecz averaged 13 points and 4.8 rebounds while leading the team in assists (3.6 aspg), steals (1.6 spg) and blocked shots (1.2 bpg). She ranked among the Top 10 in assists (3.56 aspg), blocked shots (1.50 bpg), three-point field goal percentage (21-52, .404) and steals (1.75 spg) in league play. Zavecz tallied 19 double-figure scoring games, which included a stretch of six games in a row. She currently ranks in the top 25 in six MWC career categories, including points (17th), field-goals made (T-21st), free-throws made (13th), blocked shots (8th), steals (21st) and assists (20th).
Podziemska led the Cowgirls in scoring and rebounding in her first year with the Cowgirls averaging 13.2 points and 6.4 rebounds. She also added three assists, 1.2 steals and one blocked shot per contest. This season, she finished with double-figures in scoring 20 times including two double-doubles.
Four seniors, eight juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen make up this year's all-MWC team. All nine institutions were represented, as New Mexico had three players honored on the team. BYU, TCU, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming had two players apiece.
Five different institutions were honored on this year's first team. Joining BYU's Dani Wright and TCU's Adrianne Ross on the all-MWC first-team was Katie Montgomery of New Mexico, who earned her second straight all-conference honor. Utah's Morgan Warburton was also selected to the first team for her performance during the conference season.
The Cowgirls open up play at the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Wednesday, March 7, in Las Vegas. Their first-round opponent will be the San Diego State Aztecs. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m. Mountain Time at the Thomas and Mack Center.
