Cowgirl Basketball Set To Battle TCU In Opening Round of 2012 Mountain West Championships

Hoffman is averaging 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per game

For the second time in eight days, the Wyoming basketball team will play the TCU Horned Frogs in the opening round of the 2012 Conoco Mountain West Championships. The game is set for 3:30 p.m. Mountain Time at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. Live stats can be followed or audio can be found on The game will also be broadcast on The Mtn. Wyoming is currently 11-16 overall and 7-7 in Mountain West play after 58-48 loss to the Horned Frogs last time out. The Cowgirls are led by Chaundra Sewell who is averaging a team high 13.9 points and 8.8 rebounds. Freshman Kayla Woodward follows with 11.9 points and 5.5 rebounds, while junior Ashley Sickles is adding 11.5 points plus 6.0 rebounds per game. As a team, they are shooting 559-1413 (.396) from the field and 126-446 (.283) from beyond the arc.

Sickles currently ranks third in minutes played, ninth in blocked shots, tenth in rebounding and 13th in scoring. Sewell is among the Top 15 in points, rebounds, assists, blocked shots and field goal percentage. In league games, Woodward is fourth in minutes played, sixth in rebounding and scoring, seventh in field goal percentage and three point field goals made, ninth in steals and 14th in assists. She has also recorded double-figures in 10 of 14 games during conference action as well.

TCU is 16-13 overall, 9-5 in the MW and come in as the fourth seed in the tournament. Natalie Ventress is averaging a team high 13.8 points along with 4.5 rebounds. Antoinette Thompson is adding 8.3 points while Latricia Lovings is averaging a team high 5.8 boards per game. They return three starters and six letterwinners to a team that went 22-11 overall and 13-3 in the MW to earn a spot in the first round of the WNIT.

This is the 21st meeting between the two teams. TCU leads the series 12-8. The teams split the season series as the Cowgirls earned a 64-54 win in Laramie (2/1/12), while Frogs won last week, 58-48, in Fort Worth (2/28/12). TCU is coached by Jeff Mittie who is in his 13th season with the program.
