The Wyoming women's basketball team will face the San Diego State Aztecs in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament on Monday. The Cowgirls enter Monday's contest as the ninth seed with a 13-15 overall mark while finishing ninth with a 6-12 record in league play. Last time out, Wyoming suffered a 65-51 loss against San Jose State on Tuesday night.
Senior Marquelle Dent leads the way averaging 15.6 points, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals. Freshman Marta Gomez follows with 10.9 points and 4.7 boards. Natalie Baker is adding a team high 5.9 rebounds and 8.9 points while sophomore Liv Roberts is chipping in 10.1 points and 5.7 boards. In league games, Dent finished second in minutes played, third in assists and steals along with seventh in scoring. Gomez was fourth in three-point field goals made, sixth in percentage while Baker was fourth in rebounding and 17th in rebounding. As a team, the Cowgirls are shooting 624-of-1567 (.398) from the field, 176-of-554 (.318) from the beyond the arc and 367-of-497 (.738) from the charity stripe.
San Diego State is currently 11-18 overall, 6-12 in MW play and enters the tournament as the eighth seed. The Aztecs are led by sophomore guard McKynzie Fort with 14.4 points plus 4.2 rebounds. Senior guard Ahjalee Harvey is adding 9.5 points while senior forward Deidra Smith leads the way in rebounding with 4.9. As a team, the Aztecs are averaging 58.6 points and 33.0 rebounds per contest. San Diego State returns three starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 12-19 overall and 8-10 in the league a season ago.
This is the 43rd meeting between the two schools. The series is tied up at 26 all. The Aztecs swept the season series. The last time the two teams met was February 24, 2016 with the San Diego State coming away with a 53-40 victory in San Diego. The Aztecs are coached by Stacie Terry who is in her third season with the program.
