The Wyoming Cowgirls earned a first round bye and open up with their first game of the 2011 Conoco MWC Tournament on Wednesday, March 9. Wyoming will play the winner of the New Mexico/San Diego State game that will be played on Tuesday night. The Cowgirl game is slated for 7:00 p.m. Pacific/8:00 p.m. Mountain Time in Las Vegas.
Wyoming is currently 22-7 overall and 12-4 in conference play. They lost 69-53 in their final home game against BYU on Saturday afternoon. Aubrey Vandiver is averaging a team leading 18.5 points and 9.1 rebounds, while Hillary Carlson is adding 16.7 points and 7.0 boards per contest. The Cowgirls are shooting a league leading .435 (675-1551) from the field and 211-587 (.359) from beyond the arc, plus 361-514 (.702) from the charity stripe.
Vandiver is among the Top 15 in points, rebounds, assists, steals, minutes played and field goal percentage. Carlson ranks second in blocked shots, fourth in scoring and field goal percentage and ninth in rebounding in overall games. Senior Jade Kennedy is first in minutes played, second in assist/turnover ratio and ninth in assists. In league games, Carlson is second in blocked shots, fifth in scoring, sixth in field goal percentage and ninth in rebounding. Vandiver is first in scoring, second in minutes played and third in rebounding plus seventh in field goal percentage.
The Aztecs who enter the tournament as the sixth seed are currently 12-16 overall and 6-10 in the MWC after a 66-51 loss against CSU to close out the regular season. They are led by Paris Johnson who is averaging a team high 14.1 points and 7.6 rebounds. She is followed by Courtney Clements who is adding 11.7 points, while Jessika Bradley leads the way with 8.1 rebounds per game. They return three starters and six letterwinners to a team that went 23-11 overall and 10-6 in the MWC last year.
This would be the 43rd meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 24-18. The last time the two teams met was March 2, 2011 as the Cowgirls defeated San Diego State, 63-50, in San Diego. SDSU is coached by Beth Burns who is in her 14th season with the program.
The Lobos enter the tournament as the seventh seed and are currently 11-17 overall and 5-11 in the MWC They are led by Amanda Best who is averaging a team high 11.0 points and 8.1 rebounds. She is followed by Jasmine Patterson who is adding 10.9 points and 2.7 rebounds. They return three starters and ten letterwinners to a team that went 19-13 overall and 9-7 in the MWC a year ago.
This would be the 62nd meeting between the two schools. New Mexico leads the series 34-27. The last time the two teams met was February 8, 2011 as the Cowgirls defeated the Lobos,78-65, in Laramie. New Mexico is coached by Don Flanagan who is in his 16th year with the program.
