For the first time in Mountain West Conference history and only the second time in school history a Wyoming Cowgirl basketball player has been named Player of the Year. Senior guard Aubrey Vandiver was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year as it was announced on Monday by the Mountain West Conference.
She along with Hillary Carlson were both named First Team All-MWC Conference Team. It's the third honor for each player during their career. Carlson has been named Second Team All-Mountain West Conference the last two seasons while Vandiver was named All-Mountain West Conference Second Team last season and Third Team All-MWC as a sophomore. In addition to that, senior Jade Kennedy and sophomore Chaundra Sewell each earned Honorable Mention All-Conference
Vandiver, from Laramie, Wyo., averaged a team and league leading 19.6 points, plus 8.5 rebounds per contest in MWC play. She was ranked first in scoring, second in minutes played, third in rebounding, seventh in field goal percentage, 13th in assists and 15th in steals. She recorded double-figures in 27 of 28 games this season including 12 double-doubles.
Carlson, from Cheyenne, Wyo., averaged 16.7 points, 2.2 blocks and seven rebounds per game. She was ranked second in blocked shots, fifth in scoring, sixth in field goal percentage and free throw percentage and ninth in rebounding. Carlson also tallied 23 double-figure scoring games and four double-doubles.
Kennedy, from Cairns, Australia, averaged a team high and league leading 38.1 minutes per game, while adding 8.5 points and 3.4 assists in conference action. She ranked first in minutes played, second in three-point field goal percentage, fourth in assist/turnover ratio and tenth in assists. Sewell, from Broomfield, Colo., started in all 16 conference games and averaged 10.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and a team high 3.9 assists. She ranked seventh in assists and 11th in assist/turnover ratio.
The Cowgirls open up play at the Mountain West Conference Tournament Wednesday, March 9, in Las Vegas. Their first-round opponent will be the winner of the New Mexico/San Diego State game which will play on Tuesday night. Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m. Mountain Time at the Thomas and Mack Center.
