The Wyoming women's basketball team will open up the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament against the UNLV Lady Rebels, on Wednesday afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m., at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.
The Cowgirls enter this week's competition with an overall record of 16-11 overall and 7-7 in the MWC and come in as the fourth seed in the tournament. Wyoming is currently led by senior Ashley Elliott, who is averaging 16.9 points and four assists per game. She is followed closely by Hanna Zavecz with 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds and guard Erin Hicks with 10.5 points and a team leading 7.4 rebounds. As a team, they are shooting 562-1464 (.384) from the field and 343-464 (.739) from the charity stripe, while averaging 61.6 points per game.
UNLV enters the tournament as the fifth seed with a 15-13 overall record and a 6-8 mark in the MWC. The Lady Rebels are led by Sheena Moore who is averaging 14.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. RanDee Henry leads the team in rebounding with 8.5, while adding 14.2 points per game. As a team, UNLV is shooting 684-1597 (.428) from the field and averaging 67.7 points per game. They return four starters and 12 letterwinners to a team that went 26-8 overall and 10-4 in the MWC a year ago.
This will be the 22nd meeting between the two schools. UNLV leads the series, 14-6. The two teams split the regular season series with both teams winning at home. The last time the two schools met was Feb. 19, 2005 when the Lady Rebels defeated the Cowgirls, 70-66. Wyoming won the earlier contest this season on Jan. 20, 2005 when the Cowgirls defeated the Lady Rebels, 46-43, in Laramie.
