For the second time in eight days, the Wyoming basketball team will play the Colorado State Rams in the opening round of the 2013 Reese's Mountain West Basketball Championships. The game is set for 9:30 p.m. Mountain Time at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. Live stats can be followed or audio can be found on www.gowyo.com.
The Cowgirls are currently 23-6 overall and 12-4 in MW play after earning a 14-point win, 65-51, over CSU last week in Ft. Collins. Four of five starters are averaging double-figures led by Chaundra Sewell. She is averaging 15.1 points and a league leading 9.7 rebounds. Kayla Woodward follows closely with 14.1 points and 6.2 rebounds while Kaitlyn Mileto is adding 12.4 points. Senior Ashley Sickles is chipping in 11.3 points and 5.3 boards as well.
Wyoming is first in the league in scoring offense (71.0 ppg), rebounding margin (+7.8) and assists (16.1 aspg). They are also shooting 743-1649 (.451) from the field and 183-491 (.373) from beyond the arc. Both rank first in the league. In Mountain West games, they are first in scoring offense, assists and field goal percentage, second in free throw percentage and rebounding margin.
The Rams are 11-18 overall, 7-9 in the MW and come in as the sixth seed in the tournament. They are led by Sam Martin who is averaging a team high 12.8 points and 6.8 rebounds. Caitlin Duffy is adding 10.6 points followed by Meghan Heimstra with 9.0 points. They return three starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 13-17 overall and 9-5 in the MW a year ago.
This will be the 89th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 46-42. The Cowgirls won both games during the regular conference season with a 65-51 win on March 6, 2013 in Ft. Collins, while the other match-up was February 2, 2013 as Wyoming defeated the Rams, 82-67, in Laramie. Colorado State is coached by Ryun Williams who is in his first season with the program.
