For the third consecutive year, the Wyoming basketball team will play in the semifinals for the Reese's Mountain West Basketball Championships. The Cowgirls will take on the top-seed Collorado State Rams, on Friday, March 14, at 1:00 p.m. MT. The Cowgirls are 20-10 overall after a thrilling five-point win, 61-56, over Boise State in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Kayla Woodward is averaging a team high 16.6 points plus 7.0 rebounds, while Fallon Lewis is adding 14.5 points and a team high 9.6 rebounds. Kaitlyn Mileto follows with 13.7 points and Marquelle Dent leads the way with 4.7 assists plus 10.5 points per game. In league games, Woodward finished third in scoring (16.7 ppg) and ninth in rebounding (6.9 rpg).
Wyoming is third in the league in assists (15.7 aspg), scoring offense (73.0 ppg) and scoring defense (64.7 ppg), plus fourth in rebounding margin. They are also shooting 198-572 (.346) from beyond the arc and 752-1801 (.418) from the field, which are second and fourth respectively.
The Rams are 24-6 overall, the top-seed in the tournament and won their quarterfinal opener against Utah State, 72-67. CSU is led by Sam Martin who is averaging 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Ellen Nystrom is adding a team high 6.3 rebounds while adding 9.7 points. They return three starters and six letterwinners to a team that went 11-19 overall and 7-9 in the MW last season.
This will be 92nd meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 48-43. The last time the two teams met was March 7, 2014 as the Rams defeated the Cowgirls, 58-46, in Ft. Collins. They are coached by Ryun Williams who is in his second year with the program.
