The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will be a part of post season play as they were selected to participate in the 2006 Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). It's the third time in school history that the Cowgirls have made it into the WNIT.
"Getting the WNIT to Laramie is a great reward for our student-athletes," said UW Athletics Director Gary Barta. "It is also a credit to our fans for their support which provided us the ability to put in such a strong bid."
The Cowgirls opening game, presented by Laramie GM Auto Center, is scheduled for Saturday, March 18, in the Arena Auditorium against the winner of the Oregon State/Santa Clara game, which will be played on Thursday in Corvallis. A game time will be released later. If the Cowgirls were to win on Saturday, they have been promised a second home game early next week.
"We are extremely pleased to participate in the WNIT," said Cowgirl head coach Joe Legerski. "It's a tribute to all of the hard work and accomplishments of this season for our players. The ability to host a game also shows the commitment of the Wyoming fans to this program."
Wyoming finished the regular season with an overall mark of 20-8 and 10-6 in the Mountain West Conference. They placed three players on the All-MWC Team, along with the Newcomer of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year.
Tickets for the game will go on sale at this web site and at the Wyoming ticket office tomorrow morning. Prices are $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for students and a youth ticket is $4.00. All seating is general admission.
