The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will play their first game in the 2006 Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) against Oregon State on Saturday, March 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
The second round WNIT game, presented by Laramie GM Auto Center, will match the Cowgirls, who had a first round bye, against the Oregon State Beavers (16-14 overall) who defeated Santa Clara, 77-48, on Thursday night in Corvallis.
The Cowgirls enter this week's competition with a regular season record of 20-8 overall and 10-6 in the MWC after a first round loss to the TCU Lady Frogs in the MWC Tournament. Wyoming is currently led by sophomore Hanna Zavecz, who is averaging 13.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She is followed closely by Jodi Bolerjack with 13.0 points and guard Erin Hicks with 9.3 points. As a team, they are shooting 578-1493 (.387) from the field and 380-533 (.713) from the charity stripe, while averaging 61.8 points per game.
OSU enters the week with an overall mark of 16-14, 7-11 in the PAC 10 after their win over Santa Clara on Thursday night. They are led by Kim Butler, who is averaging 18.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. As a team, they shoot 718-1643 (.437) from the field, while averaging 63.5 points per game.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two schools. OSU leads the series, 2-1. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 15, 2001 when the Beavers defeated the Cowgirls, 70-55, in Casper. Oregon State is coached by LaVonda Wagner, who is in her first year with the program.
The Cowboy Joe Club will host a pre-game reception from 5 - 6:30 p.m. in the Stadium Club Room, located in the southwest corner of War Memorial Stadium (formerly the weight room). All fans are invited to attend and admission is free to all Cowboy Joe Club members and there will be a $5 charge for non-members. Tommy Jack's & Powder River Rib Co. will be serving meals for $5 per plate. All water and soda is free of charge. There will be no alcoholic beverages served.
Tickets for the game are on sale now at WNIT Tickets or by calling the Wyoming Ticket Office at 800-922-9461. Prices are $8 for adults, $5 for students and a youth ticket is $4. All seating is general admission.
