For the first time in school history, the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will be a part of NCAA post season play as it was selected to participate in the 2008 Women's NCAA Tournament. It's the Cowgirls' fifth trip to post season as they have been to the WNIT four times in school history, including winning the 2007 Postseason WNIT Championship.
"It was a long hour for our name to appear," said UW head coach Joe Legerski. "We knew that the seeds were limited and I was extremely pleased when our name came up on the board. I'm happy for our players, staff and the fans of Wyoming."
The Cowgirls, who enter the tournament as an 11th seed, will play their first round game Saturday, March 22, against the sixth seeded Pittsburgh Panthers out of the Big East Conference. The game time is scheduled for approximately 2:30 p.m. at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M. and will be televised live on ESPN2. It Wyoming-Pittsburgh game will follow the third seeded Baylor Bears and 14th seeded Fresno State Bulldogs game that will tip off at noon.
This will only be the second meeting ever between the two schools. The last time was November 30, 1980, as the Panthers defeated the Cowgirls, 79-76. Pittsburgh finished with a 22-10 overall record this season and a 10-6 mark in the Big East Conference.
Wyoming finished the regular season with an overall mark of 24-6 and 12-4 in the Mountain West Conference. Senior Hanna Zavecz earned First Team All-MWC and Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Justyna Podziemska was named to the Second Team for the second year in a row.
