The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will open up the 2010 Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) against Nevada on Friday, March 19, at 7 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. It's the fifth time in school history that the Cowgirls have made it in to the WNIT and sixth overall for postseason play.
The WNIT game, presented by Laramie GM Auto Center, will match the Cowgirls against the Nevada Wolf Pack who finished the regular season 17-15 overall and 10-6 in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Cowgirls enter this week's game with a regular season record of 19-11 overall and 9-7 in the Mountain West Conference after earning a first round win over UNLV, 60-55, but falling to eventual champion San Diego State in the semifinals, 60-51, of the MWC tournament. They are led by Hillary Carlson who is averaging 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. Aubrey Vandiver follows with 14.2 points, a team leading 9.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals while Emma Langford is chipping in 11.5 points. Wyoming is shooting 716-1722 (.416) from the field, which is fourth in the MWC and a league leading 253-656 (.386) from beyond the arc.
Nevada is led by Tahnee Robinson with 16.5 points and four rebounds per game. She is followed by Shavon Moore with 11.3 points and seven rebounds, while Kayla Williams leads the team with 7.4 boards per game. They welcome back two starters and ten letterwinners to a team that went 18-14 overall and 10-6 in the Western Athletic Conference a year ago. This is the 12th meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 7-4. The last time the two teams met was March 15, 2007 in the first round of the WNIT Tournament. Wyoming defeated Nevada 84-56 in Laramie. The Wolf Pack are coached by Jane Albright who is in her second season with the program.
Tickets to Friday's game are on sale through the University of Wyoming Athletics Ticket Office, the Brown and Gold Outlets and on-line at www.wyomingathletics.com. Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $8 for children and $6 for UW students. Cowgirl Basketball season-ticket holders who wish to reserve their regular-season seats must either call the UW Athletics Ticket Office or drop by the ticket office prior to noon on the day of the game. The Cowboy Joe Club & UW Athletic Department invites fans to the official WNIT Pregame Hospitality prior to the Cowgirls' First Round WNIT game on Friday from (5:00-6:30 p.m.), in the Paul & Marge Roach Hall at War Memorial Lobby on the south end of War Memorial Fieldhouse. The pregame hospitality is open to the public. Cost for the pregame function will be: $7 for the general public, $5 for Brown Card Cowboy Joe Club members and FREE for Gold Card Cowboy Joe Club members. A cash bar will also be available with costs of $3 for beer and $2 for pop or bottled water.
