Due to a major snow storm across the state of Nebraska, the scheduled second round game of the 2006 Women's National Invitational Tournament between Wyoming and Nebraska has been moved from Tuesday, March 21 to Wednesday, March 22. The game will tip off at 7:00 p.m.
"We were unable to get Nebraska out of the airport in Lincoln due to the inclement weather," said Brent Amick, Executive Director of the WNIT. "They were on the runway, but forced to return to the terminal. We will be making every attempt to get them to Denver and up to Laramie tomorrow."
The WNIT game, presented by Laramie GM Auto Center, will match the Wyoming Cowgirls against the Nebraska Cornhuskers (18-12 overall), who defeated Drake, 62-59, on Friday night in Lincoln.
The Cowgirls enter this week's competition with a regular season record of 21-8 overall and 10-6 in the MWC after a first round win over Oregon State, 67-49, on Saturday night. Wyoming is currently led by sophomore Hanna Zavecz, who is averaging 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. She is followed closely by Jodi Bolerjack with 13.0 points and guard Erin Hicks with 9.2 points. As a team, they are shooting 601-1550 (.388) from the field and 395-5352(.716) from the charity stripe, while averaging 62.0 points per game.
Nebraska enters the game with a record of 18-12 overall and an 8-8 mark in the Big 12. They defeated Drake, 62-59, in the first round. They are led by Kiera Hardy, who is averaging 17.5 points and three rebounds per game. As a team, they shoot 750-1775 (.423) from the field, while averaging 67.7 points per game.
This will be the sixth meeting between the two schools. Nebraska leads the series, 5-0. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 19, 1999 when the Cornhuskers defeated the Cowgirls, 89-74, in Laramie. Nebraska is coached by Connie Yori, who is in her fourth year with the program.
