Cowgirl Basketball Opens First Round Of WNIT against Northern Colorado

The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will open up the 2013 Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) on Thursday, March 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium. The WNIT game will match the Cowgirls against the Northern Colorado Bears who finished the regular season 20-12 overall and 15-5 in the Big Sky Conference. It's the seventh time in school history that the Cowgirls have made it in to the WNIT and eighth overall for postseason play.

Wyoming is currently 24-7 overall and finished 12-4 in conference play. They lost 63-62 to Fresno State in the semifinal round of the Mountain West Tournament on Friday. First Team All-MW selection Chaundra Sewell is averaging a team high 14.9 points and a league leading 9.8 rebounds. Kayla Woodward follows closely with 14.5 points and 6.4 rebounds while Kaitlyn Mileto is adding 12.0 points. Senior Ashley Sickles is chipping in 11.1 points and 5.3 boards as well.

Wyoming is first in the league in scoring offense (70.4 ppg), rebounding margin (+8.1) and assists (15.9 aspg). They are also shooting 789-1760 (.448) from the field and 198-526 (.376) from beyond the arc. Both rank first in the league. In Mountain West games, they were first in scoring offense, assists and field goal percentage, second in scoring defense and rebounding margin.

The Bears are 20-12 overall record and finished with a 15-5 mark in the Big Sky. They lost in the championship game to Montana, 56-43. They are led by D'shara Strange who is averaging a team high 15.6 points and 7.3 rebounds. Lauren Oosdyke follows with 13.1 points and 5.9 rebounds. They return four starters and ten letterwinners to a team that went 20-12 overall and 11-5 in the Big Sky a season ago.

This will be the 27th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 18-8. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 17, 2007 as Wyoming defeated the Bears, 68-37, in Laramie. UNC is coached by Jamie White who is in her seventh season with the program.

Tickets to Thursday's game are on sale online now at and through the University of Wyoming Athletics Ticket Office. Ticket prices are $13 for adults, $7 for children (3-18) and $5 for UW students.

The Cowboy Joe Club & UW Athletic Department invites fans to the official WNIT Pregame Hospitality prior to the Cowgirls' First Round WNIT game on Wednesday from (5:00-6:30 p.m.), in the Paul & Marge Roach Hall at War Memorial Lobby on the south end of War Memorial Fieldhouse. The pregame hospitality is open to the public. Cost for the pregame function will be: FREE for Gold Card Cowboy Joe Club members, $5 for Brown Card Cowboy Joe Club members and $10 for the general public, A light meal will be served and complimentary pop or bottled water will be offered. A cash bar will also be available with costs of $3 for beer.
