The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will host the semifinal round of the 2007 Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) on Wednesday, March 28, at 7 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
The WNIT game will match the Cowgirls against the Kansas State Wildcats who are currently 19-14 overall. They earned wins over Southern Illinois, Illinois and Auburn to advance to this game. The other semifinal game will have Western Kentucky and Wisconsin facing off.
The Cowgirls enter this week's competition with a regular season record of 25-9 overall after earning wins over the Nevada Wolf Pack, 84-56, Missouri Tigers, 73-67, Oregon Ducks, 64-62, and the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 70-59. They are led by Hanna Zavecz who is averaging 13.6 points, 3.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Junior Justyna Podziemska follows adding 12.8 points and a team leading 6.4 rebounds, while Jodi Bolerjack is chipping in 11.5 points. The Cowgirls are shooting 746-1776 (.420) from the field, 244-673 (.363) from beyond the arc and 490-651 (.753) from the free throw line.
The Wildcats are led by Kimberly Dietz who is averaging 13.3 points and 3.1 rebounds. She is followed by Claire Coggins who is adding 12.3 points and 3.4 boards per contest. They return four starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 24-10 overall and 8-8 in the Big 12 a year ago. Kansas State is the defending WNIT champion.
The Cowgirls and the Wildcats have met five previous times. Kansas State holds the series record 4-1. The last time the two teams met was earlier this season, November 17, 2006 in Manhattan, when the Wildcats defeated the Cowgirls 68-62 in overtime after hitting a half court shot at the end of regulation to tie the game. They are coached by Deb Patterson who is in her 11th season with the program.

The Cowboy Joe Club is hosting a pre-game reception from 5-6:30 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex and all fans are invited to attend. Admission is free to all Cowboy Joe Club members. The Library will be serving food for $5.00 a plate. There will be a $10 charge for non-members, which includes admission and food. All water and soda is free of charge. No alcoholic beverages will be served.
Also, Wednesday's game will be Gold Rush Night. Fans show your support for your Cowgirls by wearing a gold-colored shirt to the game.
