Four teams that competed in post-season play will be featured on the 2011-12 Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball schedule, announced Thursday by the Wyoming Athletics Department. Montana competed in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, while Denver, TCU and Utah State were participants in the WNIT.
"The 2011-12 schedule will provide our fans an opportunity to support a young basketball team against quality competition," said head coach Joe Legerski. "With only one starter back, Chaundra Sewell, and a majority of our roster made up of sophomores and freshmen, we need to grow-up quickly to realize success."
The Cowgirls will open the regular season at home before playing the next three of four on the road. They will tip things off against the Utah State Aggies on Friday, Nov. 11 followed by a trip against the Denver Pioneers, on Monday, Nov. 14. A home game with Chadron State is set for Thursday, Nov. 17 before a Thanksgiving trip to the Loyola Marymount Tournament, Nov. 25-26, in Los Angeles. They are scheduled to play two games over the weekend.
UW will return home to the friendly confines of the Double A as they host three straight games beginning with the Crieghton BlueJays, on Thursday, Dec. 1, which will be televised on The Mtn. Sports Network. That will be followed by Montana, on Sat., Dec. 3 and Maryville University (St. Louis), on Saturday, Dec. 10. The Cowgirls will close out play before the Christmas break with two on the road and one at home. They will face the Weber State Wildcats on Thurs., Dec. 15 and the Idaho Vandals, on Sunday, Dec. 18 before wrapping it up against UC Irvine on Wed., Dec. 21, in Laramie.
Wyoming will play their final non-conference opponent on Thursday, Dec. 29 against Bowling Green State in Laramie.
Mountain West Conference women's games will be played primarily on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with three Tuesday games added in to the schedule. Wyoming will begin MWC play at home on Wednesday, January 11 against the UNLV Lady Rebels, followed by their first road contest against the New Mexico Lobos, on Saturday, Jan. 14 in Albuquerque. Other MWC televised games for the Cowgirls will be Saturday, Jan. 21 against the Colorado State Rams, San Diego State on Tuesday, Jan. 24, UNLV on Saturday, Feb. 4 and San Diego State on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
Head coach Joe Legerski enters his ninth season with the Cowgirl Basketball Program. He returns one starter and six letterwinners from a team that went 24-9 overall and 12-4 in the Mountain West Conference, while earning their way into the third round of the WNIT a year ago.
