LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Eight teams that competed in post-season play last year will highlight the 2006-07 University of Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball schedule, announced Friday by the UW Athletics Department.
BYU, New Mexico, TCU and Utah all competed in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, while Idaho State, Kansas State, UNC-Charlotte and UNLV were participants in the WNIT. BYU, New Mexico and Utah all finished the season ranked in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Cowgirls will see the Colorado Buffaloes, Kansas State Wildcats and Montana Lady Grizzlies early in the season and then a couple of tough match-ups against Denver, Idaho State, Northern Colorado, San Francisco and Utah State. They will host Western State at the Wyoming Shootout, on Saturday, December 9, in a double-header with the men. Prior to the start of the conference season, they will participate in two tournaments, the Coors Classic in Boulder, Colo., with games against UNC-Charlotte and Nevada, and the 27th annual Lady Griz Holiday Classic with an opening round match-up against the Idaho Vandals. Wyoming will also have a regular home-and-away series with Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, UNLV, San Diego State, TCU and Utah.
"This year's schedule will be a challenge for a team that consists mainly of sophomores and juniors," said head basketball coach Joe Legerski. "We have a couple of difficult road dates against Kansas State, Montana and at the tournament in Colorado. The strength of the Mountain West Conference coupled with our non-conference schedule will make this one of the toughest since I have been here."
The schedule begins with the Cowgirls playing two exhibition games against Adams State College, Friday, Nov. 3, and Colorado Christian Friday, Nov. 10. Then they start off the regular season by hosting the University of San Francisco, Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2:00 p.m. Following that they will be on the road for the next six of seven contests. Their first road game will be against the Northern Colorado Bears, on Wednesday, Nov. 15, in Greeley. Other road games include Denver, Idaho, Idaho State, Kansas State, Montana, UNC-Charlotte and Nevada in Boulder and Western State in Casper. The only two other home contests for the Cowgirls will be Tuesday, Nov. 21, against the Colorado Buffaloes, and the Utah State Aggies, on Sunday, Dec. 17.
Wyoming will begin Mountain West Conference play with their first three of five games at home, which will begin Thursday, January 4, against the New Mexico Lobos. They will be on the road for two contests against UNLV, on Thursday, Jan. 11, and BYU, Saturday, Jan. 13, before returning home for two games against the San Diego State Aztecs and the TCU Lady Frogs.
Head coach Joe Legerski enters his fourth season with the Cowgirl Basketball Program. He returns three starters and ten letterwinners to this year's squad, including First Team All-MWC and Defensive Player of the Year selection Hanna Zavecz, Third Team All-Conference honoree Jodi Bolerjack and Newcomer of the Year Megan McGuffey.
